Cameroon once again underlined their reputation as tournament specialists after edging South Africa 2-1 in a tense Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash at Al Medina Stadium on Sunday night.
Bafana Bafana began the contest with confidence, pressing high and creating early half chances through Lyle Foster and Relebohile Mofokeng. South Africa looked sharp in transition and asked early questions of the Cameroonian backline, but failed to turn promise into goals.
Cameroon gradually grew into the game and were rewarded in the 34th minute. From a well worked corner, Junior Tchamadeu reacted quickest inside the box to fire home and give the Indomitable Lions a crucial breakthrough against the run of play.
The goal shifted momentum as Cameroon began to control midfield exchanges, while South Africa struggled to find the final pass before the interval. Despite late pressure from Bafana, the West Africans went into the break with a slender advantage.
Cameroon struck again almost immediately after the restart to tighten their grip on the tie. Christian Kofane rose highest in the penalty area to head home from close range in the 47th minute, doubling the lead and leaving South Africa facing an uphill task.
To their credit, Hugo Broos side refused to fold. Substitutions injected fresh energy and South Africa pushed forward with renewed urgency, pinning Cameroon back for long spells. Ronwen Williams even joined attacks late on as Bafana threw numbers forward in search of a lifeline.
That persistence finally paid off in the 88th minute when Evidence Makgopa turned in Aubrey Modibas cross from close range to pull one back and set up a frantic finish.
South Africa pressed desperately in the closing stages, creating half chances and forcing late corners, but Cameroon held firm through a nervy six minutes of added time. Devis Epassy and his defence stood tall to preserve the lead and seal qualification.
For Cameroon, it was another reminder of their ability to manage knockout football, blending physicality, experience and timely goals. For South Africa, the defeat was painful, but their performance showed clear progress and belief against one of Africas most decorated sides.
Cameroon march on to the quarter-finals, while Bafana Bafana bow out with heads held high after a spirited campaign.
