Gor Mahia suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sudanese minnows, El Merreikh Bentiu, in the opening match of the CAF Champions League.
The match, played at Juba Stadium in Juba South Sudan, was expected to be a win for Gor Mahia, who boasted a formidable squad. However, the Sudanese outfit defied the odds, showcasing a disciplined and counter-attacking style that caught the Kenyan giants off guard.
The only goal of the match came in the 65th minute when El Merreikh’s speedy winger, Musa Adam, capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot the ball past Gor Mahia goalkeeper.
Gor Mahia tried desperately to equalize, throwing caution to the wind in the final minutes of the game. But their efforts were met with resolute defending from El Merreikh. As the final whistle blew, the Gor Mahia players were left dejected, while their opponents celebrated a historic victory.
Gor Mahia, as the country’s flagship club, will now have to regroup and fight their way back into the competition.
