FIFA Relegates Muhoroni Youth Over Match-Fixing Scandal

In a landmark decision announced on Friday, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned Muhoroni Youth FC, a second-tier Kenyan football club, for involvement in match manipulation, ordering its relegation to the third-tier Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Division One League ahead of next season.

FIFA’s findings, based on a thorough investigation, concluded that Muhoroni Youth engaged in activities that compromised the integrity of football competitions—an offense football’s global governing body considers a grave violation. The club has been officially notified and retains the right to appeal the decision.

This move comes against a troubling backdrop for Kenyan football, which has grappled with recurring match-fixing scandals in recent years. In January 2023, the FKF suspended 14 players and 2 coaches for alleged involvement in similar misconduct. Going further back, February 2020 saw FIFA ban four players, including one for life, as part of what it described as an “international conspiracy” to fix Kenyan league matches. Five referees were also swept up in that scandal.

In response to the latest ruling, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) released a strong statement backing FIFA’s decision.

We fully support FIFA’s action and reaffirm our zero-tolerance stance on match-fixing,” said FKF General Secretary Harold Ndege.
“We are launching a full-scale war on match-fixing in collaboration with FIFA, CAF, and all relevant authorities. Football must remain fair, honest, and competitive.

The FKF emphasized its commitment to eradicating corruption and pledged to work hand-in-hand with international and local partners to ensure accountability and transparency within the game.

This latest development underscores an intensifying crackdown on match manipulation in African football a sign that regulatory bodies are no longer willing to let the integrity of the sport be compromised.
