Barcelona staged a spirited second-half comeback to overcome a stubborn Real Valladolid side 2-1 at Estadio José Zorrilla, extending their lead at the top of La Liga to seven points.

Barcelona kept their La Liga title charge on track with a hard-fought 2-1 win over already-relegated Real Valladolid on Sunday night, overcoming an early scare thanks to a clinical second-half display.

It was the hosts who struck first, stunning the visitors inside just six minutes. Ivan Sánchez picked up a short pass from Raul Moro and fired a speculative cross-shot from the right, which took a wicked deflection off Andreas Christensen and looped over the helpless Marc-André ter Stegen into the far corner. A goal out of nowhere, but it lit up the Estadio José Zorrilla early on.

Despite dominating possession and territory, Hansi Flick’s side found it tough to break down a resolute Valladolid defence in the first half. Pau Víctor and Dani Rodríguez came close for Barça, while Ansu Fati forced a solid save from André Ferreira. The night took a sour turn for Barcelona when Rodríguez was forced off injured after a promising start, replaced by the lively Lamine Yamal.

Heading into the break trailing 1-0, Barcelona looked frustrated, but came out with renewed intensity in the second half. It took them just nine minutes after the restart to restore parity. Raphinha reacted sharply to a loose ball after Ferreira’s parry from a Ronald Araújo header, calmly slotting home into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

Momentum firmly swung in Barça’s favour and just six minutes later, they completed the turnaround. Following a patient spell of possession, Gerard Martín picked out Fermín López with a precise cut-back, and the midfielder made no mistake — guiding his first-time shot into the bottom corner to give Barcelona a 2-1 lead.

From there, Barcelona pressed for a third, with Raphinha going agonizingly close twice from free-kicks, one of which skimmed the roof of the net. Héctor Fort also rattled the post after some dazzling footwork in the box, while Ter Stegen had to stay alert to deny Juanmi Latasa at the other end in one of Valladolid’s rare attacks.

“It wasn’t our smoothest performance,” admitted head coach Hansi Flick post-match. “But the boys showed character, stayed patient, and got the job done. Now we recover and shift our focus to Inter Milan.”

The victory sees Barcelona open up a seven-point cushion at the top of La Liga, piling the pressure on Real Madrid, who play tomorrow. Valladolid, meanwhile, remain bottom with relegation confirmed, though they’ll take heart from a spirited performance against the league leaders.

Next up, Barcelona turn their attention to a season-defining Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter Milan at San Siro on Tuesday, while Valladolid head to Mallorca as they begin preparing for life in the Segunda Division.

Final Score: Real Valladolid 1-2 Barcelona
