Bayern Munich kept their Bundesliga title charge on track with a commanding 3-0 victory over Mainz at the Allianz Arena. However, Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 win over Augsburg means Bayern’s coronation will have to wait at least one more week.
Despite knowing that a win might not be enough to secure the title today, Bayern showed no signs of easing off. Mainz, aiming for a European spot, missed a golden early opportunity when Jonathan Burkardt fired over from close range. That miss proved costly, as Bayern seized control soon after.
Leroy Sane opened the scoring midway through the first half, firing a low right-footed effort into the bottom corner after a neat move inside the area. Michael Olise, outstanding throughout, doubled the lead before the break with a clinical finish after cutting inside onto his left foot.
Mainz tried to respond after halftime but couldn’t match Bayern’s quality. Sane came agonizingly close to adding a second, twice striking the woodwork. Veteran Thomas Müller made his landmark 500th Bundesliga appearance from the bench, and within minutes, Eric Dier made it 3-0, heading home from a pinpoint Olise corner.
Meanwhile, Mainz drop down to seventh place and will face Borussia Dortmund in a pivotal clash for European qualification hopes.
It wasn’t the title party Bayern had hoped for today, but with this kind of form, it feels like only a matter of time.
