Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has been forced to leave the Italy national team camp after suffering a freak injury against France on Friday night. The 22-year-old was substituted during the second half after taking a blow to his ankle, sparking concerns among Gunners fans.
The incident occurred when Ousmane Dembele fell after being challenged by Bastoni, with his studs accidentally connecting with Calafiori’s leg. The defender was clearly in pain and was immediately brought off the pitch.
While initial assessments suggested it was an impact injury, Arsenal fans will be worried after Calafiori was sent back to London for further evaluation.
Italy manager Luciano Spalletti attempted to downplay the severity of the injury, stating, “We need to assess Riccardo, but with our staff, we have a good chance to have him back for the next game.”
However, Calafiori will miss Italy’s upcoming Nations League match against Israel and will not be available for Arsenal’s crucial North London derby against Tottenham.
Arsenal are already facing a defensive crisis with midfield anchor Declan Rice suspended following a red card against Brighton.
Mikel Merino is also out due to an injury sustained in training. Calafiori’s absence adds to Arteta’s woes as the Gunners prepare for a busy schedule that includes Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup matches.
