Antoine Griezmann led Atletico Madrid to a resounding 3-1 victory over Girona in a crucial LaLiga match today. Girona, who had previously topped the LaLiga table but faltered recently with five consecutive away losses, faced a tough challenge against Atletico.
At the sunny Metropolitano stadium, LaLiga’s top scorer Artem Dovbyk shocked the home crowd by giving Girona an early lead with his 17th goal of the season from a counter-attack in the fourth minute. However, Atletico quickly regrouped and seized control of the game.
Griezmann equalized for Atletico from the penalty spot in the 34th minute after a handball by Girona’s Miguel Gutierrez inside the six-yard box. Just before halftime, Angel Correa nodded in a header from Alvaro Morata’s cross, putting Atletico ahead.
In the second half, Griezmann struck again, capitalizing on a defensive error by Girona to score a sensational goal that hit the crossbar before going in.
With this win, Atletico Madrid moved to fourth place in LaLiga with 61 points, trailing Girona by four points in third and Barcelona in second with 67 points. Real Madrid leads the table with 75 points.
Atletico now shift their focus to the Champions League quarter-final clash against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, having secured a 2-1 victory in the first leg at home.
