Barcelona’s pursuit of Jeremie Frimpong is over, with the Dutch star heading to Liverpool in a €35 million (approx. KSh 5.1 billion) deal. The move leaves Barca scrambling for alternatives as Liverpool continue their bold summer business.

Barcelona’s hopes of signing Jeremie Frimpong have officially been dashed. Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the flying Dutch full-back is set to join Liverpool as their first major signing of the summer.

The 24-year-old right-back had been high on Barcelona’s wishlist for months. The club viewed him as the perfect fit to bolster their right flank under new coach Hansi Flick. Not only would his arrival have added much-needed speed and energy to the squad, but it would’ve also allowed Jules Kounde to return to his preferred centre-back role.

Frimpong himself was reportedly drawn to Barcelona’s sporting project and was keen on the idea of working in La Liga. However, the stumbling block proved to be his €35 million (about KSh 5.1 billion) release clause — a fee Barcelona simply couldn’t match in their current financial situation.

While Barça hesitated, Liverpool acted swiftly. The Merseyside giants triggered the release clause, offered Frimpong a five-year deal, and got the deal over the line. The Dutch international is now expected to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is closing in on a move to Real Madrid. Frimpong could even feature for Liverpool in the upcoming Club World Cup, highlighting just how urgent the deal was for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

For Barcelona, this development is a tough one to swallow. Strengthening the right-back position had been one of their top priorities this summer, and missing out on Frimpong means they’ll have to revisit their shortlist quickly — but carefully.

Names like Vanderson of AS Monaco and Dodo from Fiorentina have been floated as alternatives. Both are dynamic Brazilian full-backs with attacking instincts and strong tactical awareness, but their potential fees would still test Barça’s strained finances.

Closer to home, Marc Pubill from Almeria is another name being watched for his promise and affordability. Feyenoord’s Givairo Read has also caught the eye with consistent performances in the Eredivisie.

However, any significant move for a new right-back depends on Barcelona’s ability to generate funds through player sales. With several outgoings needed to balance the books, the club must now navigate the market with caution — and perhaps a touch of creativity.

One thing’s clear: Liverpool’s bold move has reshaped the summer transfer race, and Barcelona now find themselves playing catch-up.
