Liverpool’s season in disarray as Crystal Palace deal 1-0 blow at Anfield
Liverpool’s hopes of a Premier League title have taken a significant hit following a 1-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday. This loss comes just three days after a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Atalanta at Anfield in the Europa League quarterfinals.
Eberechi Eze capitalized on Tyrick Mitchell’s cutback in the 14th minute, scoring the only goal of the match and handing Liverpool their first league defeat at Anfield in 28 matches, a streak that dates back to October 2022.
It was the 21st occasion this season that Liverpool found themselves trailing in 32 league matches, and they were unable to mount a comeback. Despite Wataru Endo striking the crossbar in the first half and Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones missing clear chances in front of the Kop after halftime.
In the dying moments, Mohamed Salah had a straightforward opportunity to score from close range for Liverpool, but his attempt lacked power and was blocked by Mitchell’s outstretched leg, denying him a goal.
Liverpool began the weekend in second place, just behind Arsenal on goal difference, but now finds themselves two points behind Manchester City after the champions’ convincing 5-1 victory over Luton on Saturday. Arsenal have the chance to reclaim the top spot by defeating Aston Villa later on Sunday.
Last month, Liverpool’s hopes of a quadruple were dashed when they lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup quarterfinals, ending Jurgen Klopp’s team’s ambitious pursuit of multiple trophies after already securing the League Cup.
