Atalanta Stun Chelsea with Spirited Comeback in Bergamo
Atalanta overturned a first-half deficit to defeat Chelsea 2-1 in Bergamo, a result that lifted La Dea into the Champions League top three and deepened the Blues’ struggles away from home in Europe.
Atalanta produced a stirring second-half comeback to beat Chelsea 2-1 at the New Balance Arena, claiming a deserved Champions League victory after growing into the contest and eventually overpowering their visitors.
Chelsea struck first midway through the opening half against the run of early pressure. After a short-corner routine, Reece James skipped down the left flank and fizzed a low cross towards the near post, where Joao Pedro slid in to steer the ball past Marco Carnesecchi. The assistant referee initially flagged for offside, but VAR intervened to confirm James had timed his run perfectly, allowing the goal to stand.
The Blues carried that momentum into the restart and went close to doubling their advantage. Reece James and Jamie Gittens both tested Carnesecchi, while Chelsea generated sustained pressure that suggested Atalanta could be in trouble. However, the Italians weathered the storm, and a disallowed equaliser for offside proved to be the turning point.
Moments later, Atalanta were level. Ademola Lookman sparked a rapid break before Charles De Ketelaere burst past Marc Cucurella and delivered an inviting cross from the byline. Gianluca Scamacca rose unmarked in the middle to plant a clinical header beyond Robert Sanchez, igniting the home crowd and swinging belief firmly towards the hosts.
From that point on, Atalanta took control. Scamacca continued to threaten, forcing Sanchez into a fine save, while De Ketelaere and Lookman repeatedly found joy between the lines. The breakthrough arrived seven minutes from time. A quick free-kick caught Chelsea flat-footed, allowing Marten de Roon to release De Ketelaere through the centre. The Belgian drove into the box and fired goalwards, his effort deflecting off Marc Cucurella and looping beyond Sanchez to complete the turnaround.
Chelsea tried to salvage a point late on, with efforts from Alejandro Garnacho, Reece James and Joao Pedro, but Atalanta’s defence held firm, and Carnesecchi stood tall when called upon in stoppage time.
The underlying numbers reflected Atalanta’s superiority, with the hosts posting an xG of 1.74 compared to Chelsea’s 1.25. More importantly, the three points propel La Dea up to third place in the expanded 36-team Champions League table, just two points behind leaders Arsenal.
Chelsea, meanwhile, slip to 11th and continue to search for consistency on the European stage, having once again failed to protect a lead away from home. For Atalanta, this was another statement night, underlining their growing reputation as one of the most dangerous sides in this season’s Champions League.
