Chelsea Football Club have officially announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the new manager of the men’s first team in a move that signals the beginning of a new era at Stamford Bridge.
The highly-rated Spanish tactician will officially take charge on July 1, 2026 after agreeing a four-year deal with the Premier League giants. Chelsea described Alonso as one of the most respected figures in modern football, citing his coaching achievements, leadership qualities and winning mentality as key reasons behind the appointment.
Alonso arrives in west London following impressive managerial spells with Real Madrid and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he established himself as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches.
His biggest achievement came during the 2023/24 season when he guided Bayer Leverkusen to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title, the first league crown in the German club’s history. That remarkable campaign elevated Alonso’s reputation across European football and attracted attention from several elite clubs.

Chelsea said the decision to appoint Alonso was based on his broad football experience, coaching philosophy, integrity and ability to help lead the club into its next phase both on and off the pitch.
Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Alonso expressed his excitement at taking over at one of the biggest clubs in world football.
Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” Alonso said.
From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.
There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.
Before moving into coaching, Alonso enjoyed an illustrious playing career that saw him win 17 major trophies for club and country. The former midfielder represented clubs including Liverpool F.C., Real Madrid and FC Bayern Munich, while also helping Spain national football team win the 2010 FIFA World Cup and two UEFA European Championship titles.
Chelsea supporters will now hope Alonso can restore the club to regular title contention and deliver sustained success at Stamford Bridge as the Blues prepare for a fresh chapter under the Spaniard.
