It was a game we should have won, having led for more than 45 minutes before conceding with minutes to go.

The result could have been worse, and could have been better too. But the performance was excellent compared to what we have seen in recent weeks.

United came into the game as heavy underdogs after a wretched run of form. Liverpool meanwhile had a 100 per cent league record to start the season.

Liverpool just didn’t seem at it in the first half, and that’s credit to the way United put them under pressure.

United won the duels, were quick to the second balls, and made Liverpool pay.

Our opener came when Scott McTominay released Dan James down the right hand side and he crossed in for Marcus Rashford to score from close range.

Rashford’s movement lost Joel Matip in the box and it was his first goal from open play since August. It was also James’ first ever United assist.

Liverpool claimed there was a foul in the build up to the goal but it was not given.

They scored just before half-time, but VAR correctly ruled it out for handball.

Adam Lallana then scored from close range with five minutes to go to equalise, to grab an undeserved point.
