Roche Strike Seals Narrow Benin Win Over Botswana In Afcon Group D
Yohan Roche’s first-half finish proved decisive as Benin edged Botswana 1-0 in a tense Africa Cup of Nations Group D clash in Rabat, keeping their qualification hopes firmly on track.
Benin claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Botswana on Saturday afternoon at the Stade Olympique de Rabat, with Yohan Roche’s 28th-minute goal separating the two sides in their Africa Cup of Nations Group D Round 2 encounter.
The match started at a brisk pace, with both teams showing early intent. Botswana carved out the first clear opening when Tumisang Orebonye tested Benin goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou, but the shot was comfortably saved. Benin responded through Aiyegun Tosin and Junior Olaitan, whose movement down the flanks caused problems for the Botswana backline.
The breakthrough arrived midway through the first half. Steve Mounie’s presence in the box proved crucial as he laid the ball into the path of left-back Yohan Roche, who struck a composed right-footed effort high into the net to give Benin the lead. It was a well-worked move and a goal that shifted momentum firmly in Benin’s favour.
Botswana came close to an equaliser before the break when Mothusi Johnson struck the crossbar from a direct free kick, a warning that Benin could not afford to relax. Despite sustained pressure, the first half ended with Benin still holding their slender advantage.
The second half was largely defined by physical battles and frequent stoppages, with fouls and injuries disrupting any real rhythm. Benin had chances to extend their lead through Steve Mounie and Tamimou Ouorou, but Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko produced several important saves to keep his side in the contest.
Botswana pushed forward late on, earning corners and free kicks in dangerous areas, yet Benin’s defence remained disciplined. The closing minutes were tense, marked by yellow cards and time-wasting as Benin looked to protect their lead. After five minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed a vital three points for the West Africans.
The win strengthens Benin’s position in Group D and boosts confidence ahead of their final group fixture, while Botswana are left with work to do if they are to keep their tournament hopes alive.
