Senegal booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after fighting back to secure a deserved 3-1 victory over a brave Sudan side at the Grand Stade de Tanger on Saturday night.

The West African giants were stunned inside six minutes when Sudan winger Aamir Abdallah fired home a precise left-footed strike to hand the underdogs a shock early lead. The goal momentarily silenced the Senegalese faithful and injected belief into the Falcons, who defended with discipline and pressed aggressively in midfield.

Senegal gradually found their rhythm and began to impose their authority through sustained possession and wave after wave of attacks. Their persistence paid off in the 29th minute when Pape Gueye unleashed a low drive from outside the box, with the ball skidding past Monged El Neel to restore parity.

As Sudan struggled to cope with Senegal’s growing tempo, the pressure eventually told again deep into first-half stoppage time. Nicolas Jackson teed up Pape Gueye, who calmly swept the ball into the top corner to give Senegal a crucial 2-1 lead heading into the break.

The second half saw Sudan attempt to respond with renewed energy, but Senegal’s experience and tactical maturity shone through. Edouard Mendy remained alert to deny Sudan any clear route back into the contest, while Sadio Mane continued to torment the defence with his movement and vision.

The decisive blow arrived in the 77th minute when substitute Ibrahim Mbaye raced onto a swift counter-attack and slotted home from close range after being set up by Mane. The goal effectively sealed the tie and drained the remaining resistance from Sudan.

Despite a spirited effort and moments of promise, Sudan were unable to breach Senegal’s backline again as the Lions professionally managed the closing stages to see out the win.

The result sends Senegal into the quarter-finals with confidence growing, while Sudan exit the tournament with heads held high after a campaign that showcased resilience and flashes of attacking quality against one of Africa’s strongest sides.
