Manchester United kicked off the weekend action at home to Aston Villa, but were unable to bounce back from their midweek Carabao Cup defeat.

A thrilling finale against West Ham last time out in the league was quickly forgotten three days later when the Hammers went to Old Trafford and won, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces further scrutiny after Kourtney Hause’s header secured a 1-0 win for Villa.

With Man City beating Chelsea in the other early kick off, this was United’s chance to make up ground on a rival, but they were poor all afternoon. Bruno Fernandes missed a late penalty to salvage a point and Cristiano Ronaldo had a quiet game.

United XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Shaw (Dalot, 34), Maguire (Lindelof, 67), Varane, Fred, McTominay (Cavani, 82), Fernandes, Pogba, Greenwood, Ronaldo.

Subs not used: Heaton, Lingard, Matic, Van de Beek, Sancho, Martial.
