A win was all Gor needed to sail into the quarterfinals and they wasted no time in showing their intent in the fifth minute with Jacques Tuyisenge blazing his effort wide after a lay off by Boniface Omondi. The duo were to combine again two minutes later this Tuyisenge being the provider but Omondi decided to sky his effort to the stands.

Dominant Start

The home side continued with their intent by dominating a large chunk of play but thus left them exposed against the Angola side who seemingly were willing to wait for their chance.

When the chance represented itself for the visitors, the home side almost paid for it. Striker Tiago Leal who was interchanging positions in the front three was to beat an offside trap on the left wing. He prided to the hosts’ box before threading a pass that forced captain Harun Shakava to make some adjustments to force the ball out for a fruitless corner.

With their attacks, Gor left holes behind and almost paid for it in the 22nd minute with Leal once again beating the offside trap to cross the ball for Ricardo Job who was to see his header miss the target by a whisker.

Wendo Red Card

The game was to take a different turn in the 36th minute when midfielder Ernest Wendo received a straight red card for fouling Eston Felix.  Petro almost took the one-man advantage with the visitors missing a glorious chance to take the lead when Job, with only goalkeeper Odhiambo to beat struck the side net; the visitors bringing on Antonio Rosa for Eston who couldn’t continue the game after the tackle by Wendo .

Oktay Sent Off

Coach Hassan Oktay we the next to be sent off a minute to the break with the hosts holding on for a scoreless draw in the first half.

Despite the setback in the first half, Gor Mahia almost took the lead a minute after the resumption with Tuyisenge header after a nice cross by Shafiq Batambuze missing the target by a whisker.

Tuyisenge Scores

The home side hustles were to pay off in the 57th minute when Boniface Omondi earned his side a penalty after being fouled in the box by Agusto Jesus. Up stepped Tuyisenge to put the ball past the Petro keeper; the visitors bringing on Carlos Carmo for Agusto Quirbeto after the setback.

In a bid to kill timekeeper Fredrick Odhiambo was to be carded for time wasting with Shakava also getting into the referee’s book for arguing with an opponent; the most side bringing on defender Geoffrey Ochieng for Boniface Omondi in a bid to aid the defence.

Mateus Domingos was to be the visitors’ last sub when he was brought in for Agusto.

Gor were to be reduced to nine men after a second yellow card for Batambuze this coming less than a minute after Tuyisenge had rattled the crossbar on the other end.
