Gor Mahia nails Ulinzi Stars 2-1 at Afraha Stadium | FKF Premier League

Gor Mahia continue their title lead in the Kenya Premier League with 9 points ahead of their league contestants.

The defending champions needed just 25 seconds to get the first goal courtesy of Ugandan Erisa Ssekisambu who headed in a Francis Mustafa cross.

Mustafa could have doubled the advantage in the 14th minute, but with plenty of space outside the 18-yard area, he could not hit the target.

The Soldiers pushed for an equalizer, and in the 21st minute, they almost got it. Brian Birgen surged forward and almost capitalized on Oscar Wamalwa’s low cross, but Shaban Odhoji managed to punch the ball and Joash Onyango eventually cleared the danger.

In the 29th minute, K’ogallo had another chance to score their second when Nicholas Kipkirui was well fed in the danger zone, but his header did not hit the back of the net, thanks to Bonaventure Muchika who pressurized the winger.

The hosts struggled in the slippery Afraha pitch and they were pleased to hear the half time whistle from the referee.

Ugandan Hashim Sempala had a chance to open his account for the defending champions minutes after the break, but he could not beat goalkeeper James Saruni who was in inspired form. The midfielder had another opportunity to score when he was slipped in after the half-hour mark, but from the edge of the box, he shot straight at the goalkeeper.

Ulinzi Stars looked to approach the game cautiously and rely on counter attacks. However, they got their goal from a set piece in the 76th minute. They won a corner and Gor Mahia defenders failed to capitalize on it, allowing Enosh Ochieng to score his 15th goal of the season.

In the 86th minute, Wellington Ochieng committed a foul on the edge of the box, it was brought in and Birgen narrowly headed wide. The visitors initiated a counter attack immediately and the ball was passed to former Soldier, Samuel Onyango who expertly placed the ball past Saruni and into the back of the net.

The result means Gor are now on 58 points after 25 games, with Ulinzi Stars 8th with 36 points.
