Mathare United 3-1 Vihiga United: ‘Slum Boys’ keep good run after another win

Mathare United’s excellent run in the Kenyan Premier League continued when they defeated visitors Vihiga United 3-1 at Kasarani Stadium.

Against the run of play, it was the visitors who took the lead after a half an hour thanks to an own goal from Johnstone Omurwa. Hedmond Mauda did well to go past David Okello, and Omurwa, who was desperately trying to save the ball, ended up hitting the back of the net.

The ‘slum boys’, however, fought hard to make things even and were rewarded in the 42nd minute. Zablon Khaemba handled the ball in the danger zone and the referee had no option but point to the spot. Kevin Kimani rose for the occasion and held his cool to level matters.

Francis Kimanzi led side led for the first time in the 50th minute when Moffat Juma turned David Owino’s cross into his own net.

Three minutes later, it was 3-1, this time round Cliff Nyakeya finishing off a perfect cross by Chrispin Oduor.

The result means Mathare United lead the standings with twenty three points after seven wins and two draws, and are so far unbeaten in the top tier.
