Marc Cucurella’s second-half header from a pinpoint Reece James cross proved the difference in a tense encounter. Chelsea edged closer to securing Champions League football next season after a narrow but vital 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

In a match filled with tension and missed opportunities, it was defender Marc Cucurella who proved the unlikely hero, heading home a fine Reece James delivery in the 71st minute to send the home crowd into celebration.

United thought they had opened the scoring early on when Harry Maguire finished off a brilliant cross from Bruno Fernandes, but VAR swiftly ruled the effort out for offside. Chelsea came closest in the first half through Noni Madueke and a thunderous long-range strike from James that rattled the post.

The drama continued after the break when Chelsea were briefly awarded a penalty as Tyrique George went down under a challenge from Andre Onana, only for VAR to overturn the decision after replays showed minimal contact.

Chelsea created more clear-cut chances, with Cole Palmer and Madueke wasting opportunities to seal the result, but Cucurella’s header ultimately proved enough.

The Blues’ xG of 0.82 reflected their slight edge over United’s 0.37 in a game where neither side was at their fluent best.

The result moves Chelsea into fourth place, leapfrogging Aston Villa on goal difference, while Manchester United remain 16th, still enduring their worst-ever Premier League campaign. Chelsea now turn their attention to a final-day trip to Nottingham Forest, while United prepare for their Europa League final showdown with Tottenham in Bilbao.
