Egypt made history at the World Cup after beating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 clash at Dallas Stadium.

The Pharaohs, Africa’s most successful football nation, finally secured their first World Cup knockout victory after holding their nerve in a dramatic shoot-out.

Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive penalty, sending Egypt into the last 16 and ending Australia’s hopes after another painful knockout near miss.

Egypt had taken an early lead through Emam Ashour in the 13th minute. After Australia failed to clear a free-kick situation, Karim Hafez delivered a fine cross to the back post, where Ashour rose well to head home.

Australia had started brightly and almost went ahead when Cristian Volpato struck the crossbar with a powerful long-range effort. But Egypt settled quickly and used their experience to take control of the first half.

Mohamed Salah, who had recovered from a hamstring concern to start, was involved in Egypt’s attacking play, though he did not look fully sharp throughout the contest.

Egypt had chances to extend their lead, with Omar Marmoush missing a big opportunity early in the second half. That miss proved costly as Australia found a way back into the game in the 55th minute.

Mohamed Hany, who had already endured difficult moments at the tournament, scored an own goal when he glanced Aiden O’Neill’s dangerous free-kick into his own net.

The equaliser gave Australia belief, but they still struggled to create clear chances. Egypt finished stronger in normal time, with Patrick Beach producing a brilliant late save to deny Rami Rabia and keep the Socceroos alive.

Extra time brought more tension than quality. Salah missed a good chance to win the game for Egypt, while Australia spent long spells defending deep and trying to survive until penalties.

Australia coach Tony Popovic made a late goalkeeper change, bringing on captain Mat Ryan for Beach just before the shoot-out. But the switch did not deliver the result the Socceroos wanted.

Harry Souttar missed Australia’s opening penalty, sending his effort over the bar. Egypt took advantage, with Mahmoud Saber, Rami Rabia and Salah all converting.

Salah showed great composure with a Panenka-style penalty down the middle, giving Egypt control of the shoot-out. Australia stayed alive through Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil, but teenager Lucas Herrington struck the crossbar with their fourth kick.

That gave Abdelmaguid the chance to win it, and he made no mistake, placing his penalty confidently into the net to spark huge Egyptian celebrations.

For Australia, it was another painful end to a World Cup knockout tie. They showed fight and discipline but lacked enough quality in the final third and paid the price in the shoot-out.

For Egypt, this was a landmark moment. After years of frustration on the World Cup stage, they finally delivered a knockout victory and gave their supporters a night to remember.

The Pharaohs will now face either defending champions Argentina or Cape Verde in the last 16. After surviving a tense test against Australia, Egypt will believe their World Cup journey still has more to offer.
