Football's governing body FIFA has vowed to take "adequate actions" in response to the racist abuse that appeared to be directed at Manchester City's Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund during England's 4-0 win over Hungary last night.
On a night where Gareth Southgate's side took another huge stride towards next year's World Cup in Qatar, England players Sterling — who scored the Three Lions' opening goal — and Bellingham were allegedly subjected to racist abuse from the Hungarian supporters.
Monkey chants were alleged to have been directed at both players.
City ace Sterling, who continued to shine on the international stage, was pelted with cups thrown from the stand behind the goal after he had handed England the lead ten minutes into the start of the second half.
A statement released by FIFA read: "First and foremost, FIFA strongly rejects any form of racism and violence and has a very clear zero tolerance stance for such behaviour in football.
FIFA will take adequate actions as soon as it receives match reports concerning yesterday’s Hungary-England game.
With regards to the previous UEFA sanction against Hungary, please note that as specified by UEFA at the time, this sanction is to be served in UEFA competitions."
Prior to FIFA releasing its statement to condemn the actions of those responsible, Prime Minister Boris Johnson took to Twitter to urge FIFA to take action against those involved.
It is completely unacceptable that England players were racially abused in Hungary last night," Johnson said.
