Getafe's La Liga match against Alaves was temporarily halted due to abusive chants directed at on-loan Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

The 22-year-old, who is spending the season with Getafe on loan from Manchester United, faced these chants just after the home team took an early lead. In February 2023, Greenwood had charges including attempted rape and assault dismissed by the Crown Prosecution Service, accusations he has always denied. His tenure with Getafe has seen frequent crowd jeering related to these past allegations.

During Saturday's match against Alaves, referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez stopped play 18 minutes in due to chants of "Greenwood, die" from home supporters. The stadium's sound system broadcasted a warning to cease the offensive chants, leading to a reduction in the hostile behavior.

Despite this intervention, Getafe's staff were disturbed by the persistent criticism targeting Greenwood throughout the game. The club has not yet decided whether to lodge a formal complaint with La Liga regarding the incident.

Alaves won the match 1-0, handing Getafe their fourth consecutive defeat. Substitute Ilaix Moriba was sent off in the 95th minute with a second yellow card. Greenwood played the full match but did not add to his season tally of eight goals and six assists.

Greenwood, once capped by England, is unlikely to return to Manchester United next season. The club is considering another loan or a permanent transfer, with his contract running until June 2025 and an option for a one-year extension. Napoli and several unnamed Premier League clubs have shown interest, while Getafe would like to keep him. Getafe's president Angel Torres expressed a desire for Greenwood to stay, pending developments from Manchester United.
