Mali produced a stirring display of character and composure to eliminate Tunisia on penalties after a gripping 1-1 draw that stretched through extra time.

The West Africans were dealt an early blow when Woyo Coulibaly was sent off midway through the first half, leaving Mali to battle with ten men for over an hour against a disciplined Tunisian side. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Mali remained compact and organised, frustrating Tunisia for long spells.

Tunisia finally broke the deadlock late in normal time when Firas Chaouat powered in a header in the 88th minute, seemingly sending the North Africans through. However, drama followed deep into stoppage time as Yassine Meriah was penalised for handball, handing Mali a lifeline from the spot.

Lassine Sinayoko kept his nerve in the 90th minute to convert the penalty and force extra time, sparking celebrations on the Malian bench and shifting the momentum firmly in their favour.

Neither side could find a winner during extra time, despite Tunisia enjoying more possession and Mali defending bravely with bodies on the line. The contest was eventually decided by a nerve shredding penalty shootout.

Djigui Diarra rose to the occasion for Mali, producing two crucial saves as Tunisia faltered under pressure. El Bilal Toure then stepped up to calmly slot home the winning penalty, sealing a famous victory for Mali and sending their supporters into raptures.

It was a triumph built on resilience, belief and outstanding goalkeeping, as Mali marched on while Tunisia were left to rue missed opportunities from twelve yards.
