Brazil kept their World Cup dream alive in dramatic fashion after Gabriel Martinelli struck in stoppage time to seal a tense 2-1 comeback win over Japan in Houston.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side were pushed to the limit by a disciplined and fearless Japan team, who looked set to pull off one of the tournament’s biggest shocks before Brazil found a late escape route.
Japan took the lead in the 29th minute through Kaishu Sano, who punished Brazil after a poor pass from Danilo. Sano drove forward, went past Casemiro too easily and fired a composed effort from the edge of the box to stun the five-time world champions.
The goal exposed some familiar problems in Brazil’s midfield. Casemiro had already been booked and looked slow in the build-up to Japan’s opener, while Brazil struggled to control the tempo for long periods of the first half.
Japan defended with confidence after taking the lead, frustrating Brazil and forcing Ancelotti’s men to search for answers after the break. The pressure, however, finally paid off in the 56th minute.
Casemiro, who had earlier missed a golden chance from close range, made amends by heading home Gabriel’s cross at the far post. It was a big moment for the experienced midfielder, who responded to his earlier mistake with the equaliser Brazil badly needed.
Brazil almost completed the turnaround moments later when Vinicius Jr produced a brilliant solo run and shot, only for Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to push the effort onto the post.
Japan continued to fight bravely and appeared to be closing in on extra time, but Brazil’s bench strength eventually made the difference. Bruno Guimaraes found Martinelli late in added time, and the Arsenal forward poked the ball beyond Suzuki.
The Japan goalkeeper got a touch, but the ball hit the inside of the post and rolled over the line to spark wild Brazilian celebrations. For Japan, it was another painful World Cup knockout defeat after leading in a major elimination match.
Brazil will be relieved more than comfortable. They showed character, depth and a winning mentality, but the performance also raised serious questions. Their midfield was opened up too easily, their attack lacked a natural No 9 for much of the game, and they started slowly again.
Ancelotti still has major decisions to make if Brazil are to go deeper in the tournament. Matheus Cunha struggled to lead the line, Lucas Paqueta failed to influence the game before going off injured, and Brazil looked more dangerous only after fresh legs were introduced.
Martinelli’s winner will dominate the headlines, but Brazil know they cannot keep relying on late rescue acts. Stronger opponents may not allow them the same way back.
Japan exit with heartbreak, but also with pride. They were organised, brave and dangerous on the break, and for long spells they made Brazil look beatable.
Brazil now move into the round of 16, where they will face either Ivory Coast or Norway. Their World Cup journey continues, but Ancelotti’s side will need a sharper and more complete performance in the next round.
