Morocco booked their place in the World Cup round of 16 after edging Netherlands 3-2 on penalties in a tense knockout battle in Monterrey.
The match had finished 1-1 after extra time, with both sides producing moments of quality, missed chances and huge saves before Morocco finally held their nerve from the spot.
Ismael Saibari scored the decisive penalty for Morocco after goalkeeper Yassine Bounou had once again stepped up on the big stage. Bounou saved Crysencio Summerville’s effort in the shoot-out, giving Morocco the platform to complete another memorable World Cup night.
Netherlands had looked on course for victory after Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute. The forward finished off a sharp Dutch break started by Summerville, sparking emotional celebrations from the Netherlands players.
Gakpo’s goal carried extra feeling after a difficult personal period for the player and his family. His reaction after scoring showed just how much the moment meant, as Netherlands appeared to have found the goal that would take them through.
Morocco, however, refused to go quietly. They kept pushing late in the match and were rewarded in stoppage time when Issa Diop attacked a cross into the box and powered a header into the corner.
That equaliser changed the mood completely. Netherlands, who had been minutes away from progressing, were forced into extra time against a Morocco side growing in belief.
The best chance of extra time fell to Soufiane Rahimi, who looked certain to score when he went one-on-one with Bart Verbruggen. The Dutch goalkeeper produced a superb point-blank save to keep Netherlands alive and send the contest to penalties.
But Verbruggen could not rescue his team in the shoot-out. Netherlands missed three penalties, while Morocco also survived their own nervous moments before Saibari stepped up to finish the job.
For Morocco, this was another statement victory on the world stage. They showed courage, patience and mental strength against one of Europe’s strongest football nations.
The result also continues Morocco’s reputation as one of Africa’s most dangerous tournament teams. Their defensive discipline, technical confidence and belief under pressure made the difference when the match reached its most demanding moments.
For Netherlands, it was a painful exit. Ronald Koeman’s tactical approach will come under scrutiny after his side gave up control for long periods and failed to protect their late lead.
The Dutch had the attacking quality to hurt Morocco, but their conservative set-up invited pressure and left them vulnerable in the closing stages. Gakpo’s goal and Verbruggen’s saves nearly carried them through, but Morocco’s persistence eventually told.
Morocco will now face Canada in the last 16 on Saturday in Houston. After Canada’s dramatic win over South Africa and Morocco’s penalty triumph over Netherlands, that fixture promises another emotional knockout showdown.
