France booked their place in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Paraguay in Philadelphia.
Kylian Mbappe made the difference in the 70th minute, calmly converting from the penalty spot after Diego Gomez was judged to have fouled Desire Doue inside the box following a VAR review.
It was not a fluent performance from France, but Didier Deschamps’ side found a way through a stubborn Paraguay defence that frustrated them for long spells.
Paraguay came into the match full of belief after their shock penalty win over Germany in the previous round. Gustavo Alfaro’s side again set up to defend deep, deny space and force France into wide areas.
For much of the first half, that plan worked. France dominated possession and pinned Paraguay back, but they struggled to create clear openings. The match reached half-time without a single shot on target from either side, underlining how tight and cagey the contest had become.
France sent cross after cross into the box, but Paraguay’s back line stood strong. Gustavo Gomez, Juan Jose Caceres and Junior Alonso helped keep Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele quiet for long spells, while goalkeeper Orlando Gill dealt confidently with the pressure around him.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with France controlling the ball but finding few clean routes to goal. Manu Kone forced Gill into an excellent save from distance, while Mbappe began to find more pockets of space as Paraguay tired.
The breakthrough finally arrived after Doue’s quick footwork forced Gomez into a late challenge inside the area. Referee Ilgiz Tantashev initially allowed play to continue, but after being sent to the monitor, he awarded France the penalty.
Mbappe stepped up with pressure on his shoulders and sent Gill the wrong way, placing his penalty into the bottom corner. It was another huge World Cup moment for the France captain, who continues to deliver when his country needs him most.
The goal was Mbappe’s seventh of the tournament and strengthened his place among the leading scorers at the competition. It also continued his impressive record in World Cup knockout football.
Paraguay tried to respond late on, but they lacked the attacking quality to seriously trouble Mike Maignan. Their best moments came from set-pieces and hopeful deliveries, but France managed the closing stages with experience.
Mbappe nearly added a second in stoppage time, only for Gill to produce two brilliant saves to keep Paraguay alive. The French captain should have finished the match earlier, but France had already done enough.
Paraguay leave the tournament with pride after eliminating Germany and pushing another European heavyweight to the limit. However, their lack of attacking threat proved costly, as they managed very little going forward.
For France, the win was more about control and patience than style. They were made to work hard in the Philadelphia heat, but their quality eventually told.
Deschamps will know his side must improve in the final third, especially with tougher tests ahead. But in knockout football, survival matters most, and France once again showed they know how to handle pressure.
Les Bleus will now face Morocco in the quarter-finals in Boston. After Morocco’s win over Canada, the meeting promises to be one of the standout ties of the tournament.
