Merino Late Strike Ends Ronaldo World Cup Dream

Mikel Merino scored in stoppage time as Spain beat Portugal 1-0 in Dallas to reach the World Cup quarter-finals and end Cristiano Ronaldo’s final tournament run.

Spain found a late answer in Dallas, edging Portugal 1-0 to reach the World Cup quarter-finals and bring Cristiano Ronaldo’s long chase for the trophy to an emotional end.

The Round of 16 tie never fully caught fire, despite the weight of the rivalry and the quality on both sides. For long spells, Spain controlled the ball without cutting Portugal open, while Roberto Martinez’s team stayed compact but offered too little in attack.

Then came the decisive moment in stoppage time.

Mikel Merino, introduced from the bench, timed his run between Portugal’s centre-backs and finished low past Diogo Costa in the 91st minute. It was a rare clean attacking move in a match that had struggled for rhythm, and it was enough to send the European champions into the last eight.

Spain had more of the ball and created the better openings, finishing with 15 shots and six on target. Portugal had 10 attempts but only two on target, a fair reflection of a forward line that never truly found its spark.

Ronaldo, captaining Portugal at 41, had said before the match that this would be his final World Cup. If this was his last appearance on that stage, it ended quietly. He received little service, struggled to influence the game and cut a frustrated figure as Spain kept control of the key areas.

Portugal did push late after falling behind. Bernardo Silva came close with a header in added time, but his effort drifted over the top of the net. It was the closest Portugal came to forcing extra time.

Spain, while not at their fluent best, showed the value of patience and defensive discipline. Luis de la Fuente’s side have still not conceded at this World Cup, and that record gave them the platform to stay calm even when the match seemed to be heading for another 30 minutes.

Rodri again played an important role in midfield, helping Spain manage possession and stop Portugal from building sustained pressure. Lamine Yamal had bright moments, though Portugal largely kept him from producing a decisive final action.

For Portugal, the exit will raise fresh questions about Martinez. His side had enough individual talent to go deeper, but their attacking display against Spain was flat. Bruno Fernandes, Pedro Neto and Joao Felix all struggled to give Ronaldo meaningful support.

Spain did not need to be spectacular. They needed one moment of quality, and Merino supplied it.

The result sends Spain into a quarter-final against either the United States or Belgium. For Portugal, the defeat marks another painful end to a major tournament and possibly the closing chapter of Ronaldo’s international World Cup story.

One of football’s greatest players leaves the competition without the one prize that always escaped him.
