Mexico Cruise Past South Africa In FIFA World Cup Opener

Mexico launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in impressive fashion with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa in front of a passionate home crowd at Mexico City Stadium on Thursday night.

Julian Quinones emerged as the standout performer, scoring the opening goal and creating the second as Javier Aguirre's side secured all three points in their Group A opener.

The hosts wasted little time asserting themselves and nearly found an early breakthrough inside five minutes. Israel Reyes delivered a dangerous cross from the right flank, but South Africa captain Ronwen Williams reacted brilliantly to push Raul Jimenez's effort around the post.

Mexico's pressure eventually paid off moments later. Erik Lira won possession high up the pitch after dispossessing Sphephelo Sithole before Quinones calmly slotted the ball through the legs of Williams from just inside the penalty area.

South Africa struggled to contain the Mexican attack throughout the opening half but remained within touching distance thanks to the heroics of Williams. The goalkeeper produced another excellent save to deny Jimenez, while the woodwork prevented Quinones from doubling the advantage before the break.

Any hopes of a South African comeback suffered a major setback early in the second half. Jimenez raced clear on goal and was brought down by Sithole on the edge of the penalty area. The referee showed a straight red card, reducing Bafana Bafana to ten men.

The numerical advantage quickly paid dividends for Mexico. Teenager Gilberto Mora, aged just 17, was introduced to a thunderous reception from the home supporters. Within a minute of his arrival, Mexico struck again.

Quinones combined neatly with Jimenez before releasing Roberto Alvarado down the flank. The winger delivered a dangerous cross to the back post where Jimenez rose highest to head home Mexico's second goal of the evening.

The match ended in dramatic fashion with both sides reduced further. South Africa substitute Themba Zwane and Mexico defender Cesar Montes were both sent off during the closing stages, although the dismissals did little to dampen the celebrations among the home supporters.

The victory sends Mexico to the top of Group A on goal difference after the opening round of matches. South Korea also collected three points following their win over Czechia, leaving South Africa and Czechia searching for their first points of the tournament.

One of the notable moments of the match came with Mora's appearance. At 17 years and 240 days old, the young midfielder became the sixth-youngest player ever to feature at a FIFA World Cup. Only football legends including Pele, Salomon Olembe, Femi Opabunmi, Samuel Eto'o and Norman Whiteside made their World Cup debuts at a younger age.

Speaking after the match, Quinones expressed his delight at scoring his first World Cup goal.

"I'm happy and excited to score my first World Cup goal, in such a spectacular stadium with amazing fans. It's important for me to acknowledge what my team-mates did to secure the first three points."

Alvarado also reflected on the emotional occasion after providing the assist for Jimenez's goal.

"It was a really beautiful feeling, something beyond words. Playing a match of this magnitude at home with these fans is something I always dreamed about."

For South Africa, goalkeeper Williams admitted mistakes proved costly but remained optimistic about the team's chances moving forward.

"If you make mistakes, they will punish you at this level. We kept fighting and we'll continue improving as a team."

Mexico will now look to build on their strong start as they target qualification for the knockout stages, while South Africa face an uphill battle in their remaining Group A fixtures.
