Kenya’s U17 Women’s National Team, the Junior Starlets, has made history by qualifying for the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup. This achievement marks the first time the team will participate in the prestigious tournament. The Junior Starlets secured their spot with a decisive victory over Burundi, showcasing their skill and determination.

Marion Serenge capitalized on a defensive mishap in the 17th minute, putting Kenya ahead in their history-making World Cup qualifier against Burundi. A collision between Burundi’s Glris Gakiza and goalkeeper Claira Nshrimimana left the net exposed, allowing Serenge to tap the ball home for a 1-0 lead.

Burundi threatened an immediate response, but Chacheline Hakimana’s hesitation allowed Kenyan defender Elizabeth Ochaka to make a crucial intervention and clear the danger. Kenya pressed their advantage, and Valerie Nekesa doubled their lead with a well-placed finish. Nekesa expertly controlled a pass, weaved past the defense, and slotted the ball past Burundi’s goalkeeper to make it 2-0 for the Starlets.

Burundi nearly pulled one back just before the half-hour mark, but Salum Lumuli skied their best chance from close range. Despite needing five unanswered goals to draw the tie, Burundi continued to attack in the second half. However, the Kenyan defense remained resolute, absorbing the pressure and securing a crucial 2-0 victory.
