  • Arsenal restored their five-point lead at the Premier League summit after surviving a late Chelsea scare to win a tense London derby at the Emirates.

Arsenal strengthened their grip on the Premier League title race with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over 10-man Chelsea in a pulsating London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.

Mikel Arteta’s side had to withstand late pressure from the Blues but ultimately did enough to secure three vital points that keep Manchester City at arm’s length in the title chase.

The Gunners started with purpose and were rewarded in the 21st minute through their trusted weapon set-pieces. Bukayo Saka’s deep corner was nodded back across goal by Gabriel, allowing William Saliba to force the ball home from close range to give the hosts an early advantage.

Chelsea gradually grew into the contest and found a way back just before the break. Reece James whipped in a dangerous corner that was inadvertently glanced into his own net by Piero Hincapie in first-half stoppage time, sending the sides into the interval level at 1-1.

The second half opened with both teams showing attacking intent, but Arsenal regained control midway through the period. Declan Rice delivered a pinpoint corner in the 66th minute and Jurrien Timber rose highest to power home a decisive header that restored the Gunners’ lead.

Chelsea’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a major blow moments later when Pedro Neto was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Gabriel Martinelli, reducing Liam Rosenior’s men to ten players.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the visitors pushed forward bravely in the closing stages. David Raya was forced into two crucial late interventions, including a brilliant stop deep into stoppage time, before an offside flag denied Chelsea a dramatic equaliser.

In the end, Arsenal’s defensive discipline and efficiency from set-pieces proved the difference in a tightly contested encounter that saw the hosts post 1.13 expected goals compared to Chelsea’s 1.05.

The victory restores Arsenal’s five-point cushion at the top of the table and keeps their title ambitions firmly on track, while Chelsea suffer their first Premier League defeat under Rosenior and miss the chance to close in on the top four.

Both sides now turn attention to midweek away fixtures, with Arsenal travelling to Brighton and Chelsea set to face Aston Villa.
