Article Summary
  • Gor Mahia moved nine points clear at the top of the FKF Premier League after edging Mathare United in a dramatic Nyayo Stadium clash.

Gor Mahia underlined their championship credentials with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mathare United on Saturday evening at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

The record champions had to dig deep to secure the win, but the result pushed K’Ogalo to 49 points, opening a commanding nine-point gap at the summit of the FKF Premier League table.

From the opening whistle, Gor Mahia set the tempo with aggressive pressing and sustained attacking intent. However, despite their early dominance, they struggled to penetrate a disciplined Mathare United backline in a tightly contested first half that ended goalless.

Sensing the need for fresh impetus, head coach Charles Akonnor made bold halftime changes, introducing Ebenezer Assifuah, Paul Ochuoga and Bryton Onyona. The tactical reshuffle proved decisive.

Gor finally broke the deadlock in the 67th minute when Assifuah timed his run perfectly to latch onto Jackson Dwang’s incisive through ball before calmly slotting past goalkeeper Kevin Ouru.

Mathare United refused to fold and mounted a late response. Their persistence paid off in the 83rd minute when Dennis Okoth punished a defensive lapse, converting from close range after Gor failed to clear their lines to restore parity.

But the drama was far from over.

With four minutes remaining, Assifuah was brought down inside the penalty area after another dangerous Gor attack. Enock Morrison stepped up with composure and coolly dispatched the spot kick, sending the Nyayo crowd into celebration and sealing all three points for the league leaders.

The victory extended Gor Mahia’s unbeaten run to seven matches and strengthened their push for a 22nd league crown following last season’s rare trophy drought.

Off the pitch, however, the club fell short of their gate revenue target. Gor Mahia confirmed collections of KSh 941,200 from the match, an increase of KSh 65,050 from their previous home fixture against KCB but still below the KSh 1 million mark.

The Mathare clash marked the sixth consecutive home game in which K’Ogalo have failed to surpass the million-shilling threshold. Their last major windfall remains the Mashemeji Derby against AFC Leopards, which generated KSh 7,011,500.

Despite the financial shortfall, the mood around the club remains upbeat as performances on the pitch continue to deliver. With AFC Leopards and Shabana locked on 40 points behind them, Gor Mahia have firmly placed themselves in the driving seat as the title race gathers momentum.
