  • Roma let victory slip at the death as Federico Gatti’s stoppage-time equaliser sealed a dramatic 3-3 Serie A draw with Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma were left stunned in the Italian capital after surrendering a commanding lead to draw 3-3 with Juventus in a breathless Serie A Round 27 showdown at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday night.

In a contest that swung wildly from end to end, the Giallorossi twice held control but ultimately paid the price for failing to shut the door, as Juventus snatched a dramatic point with virtually the final kick of the match.

The hosts began with purpose and nearly struck inside three minutes when Niccolo Pisilli forced Mattia Perin into an early save, but Lorenzo Pellegrini failed to convert the rebound. Juventus responded through Kenan Yildiz, whose effort flew over, setting the tone for an open contest.

Roma’s persistence finally paid off in the 39th minute. Pisilli released Wesley on the left and the Brazilian produced a moment of real quality, cutting inside before curling a superb effort into the top-right corner beyond Perin to give the home side a deserved lead.

Juventus emerged from the break with renewed urgency and needed just two minutes to restore parity. After a half-cleared free kick, Gleison Bremer teed up Francisco Conceicao, who unleashed a thunderous strike under Mile Svilar’s crossbar to make it 1-1.

The momentum shift was short-lived. Roma responded in the 54th minute when Pellegrini’s clever delivery from a short corner found Evan Ndicka, who reacted quickest to prod home and restore the hosts’ advantage.

When Kouadio Kone split the Juventus defence with a perfectly weighted through ball for Donyell Malen to delicately dink Perin in the 65th minute, Roma looked firmly in control at 3-1 and cruising towards a vital three points.

However, Juventus refused to fold.

The Bianconeri began their comeback in the 78th minute through substitute Jeremie Boga. After Edon Zhegrova’s dangerous cross caused confusion in the box, the Ivorian reacted sharply to volley home and reduce the deficit, injecting fresh belief into the visitors.

Roma tried to manage the closing stages but could not hold firm under late pressure. Deep into stoppage time, Juventus delivered the decisive blow. A floated free kick caused panic in the Roma area and the loose ball fell kindly to Federico Gatti, who smashed past Svilar to silence the Olimpico and spark wild celebrations among the away supporters.

The dramatic finish ensured the spoils were shared in what will go down as one of the season’s most entertaining encounters.

Roma, despite generating 1.65 xG and looking in control for long spells, dropped two crucial points and remain fourth in the standings. Juventus, who slightly outperformed their 1.39 xG, stay sixth but will take immense encouragement from their late fightback.

For the neutral, it was pure Serie A theatre.
