Botswana has formally announced its intention to co-host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations together with South Africa, signaling a major step in the race to stage Africa’s flagship football tournament.
The confirmation emerged as the CAF Executive Committee met in Rabat, Morocco, where discussions centered on future competitions, including the selection of host nations for upcoming AFCON editions.
The joint bid is built on a strategic partnership between the two southern African neighbors, aimed at pooling infrastructure, experience, and logistical capacity to deliver a successful continental spectacle. South Africa brings proven hosting pedigree, while Botswana’s inclusion underlines a growing ambition to play a more prominent role on the African football stage.
CAF is expected to review detailed elements of the bid in the coming months, including proposed stadiums, training facilities, accommodation, and overall hosting plans. A final decision on the 2028 hosts is anticipated later in the year.
