Champions League Giants Flex Muscle In Last-16 Deciders
- Bayern Munich and Liverpool produced ruthless displays to book their places in the Champions League quarter-finals, while Atletico Madrid survived a spirited Tottenham fightback to complete a dramatic night of last-16 action.
Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid all secured their places in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night, each doing so in different fashion as Europe’s elite knockout race intensified.
At the Allianz Arena, Bayern completed one of the most one-sided ties of the round by thrashing Atalanta 4-1 on the night to seal a crushing 10-2 aggregate victory. Vincent Kompany’s side had already all but finished the job with a 6-1 first-leg win in Bergamo, but they showed no interest in easing off in front of their home fans.
Harry Kane set the tone for the German champions, converting a retaken penalty in the 25th minute after Marco Sportiello had initially saved from the spot only to be judged off his line. Kane then doubled Bayern’s lead in superb fashion early in the second half, turning sharply before blasting into the top corner.
The floodgates opened from there. Lennart Karl, one of Bayern’s brightest young performers on the night, added the third just two minutes later after a slick attacking move, before Luis Diaz raced through to chip Sportiello and bring up Bayern’s 10th goal across the two legs.
Atalanta did at least find a late consolation through Lazar Samardzic, whose close-range header cut the deficit to 4-1 on the night, but it did little to change the overall picture. Bayern dominated the tie from start to finish and now head into the quarter-finals looking every inch genuine contenders for the crown.
Over at Anfield, Liverpool produced a stirring comeback to overturn a first-leg deficit and beat Galatasaray 4-0, advancing 4-1 on aggregate after a commanding display in front of a charged home crowd.
Arne Slot’s men came into the match needing a response and they delivered one with conviction. Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring in the 25th minute after meeting Alexis Mac Allister’s clever corner routine, bringing Liverpool level in the tie.
The Reds could have gone ahead before the break, but Mohamed Salah saw his penalty saved by Ugurcan Cakir, who kept Galatasaray in the contest with a string of impressive stops. Yet the Turkish side could only hold on for so long as Liverpool’s relentless pressure eventually told in the second half.
Hugo Ekitike gave the hosts the aggregate lead in the 51st minute after Salah turned provider with a low ball across the face of goal. Ryan Gravenberch then reacted quickest to a rebound two minutes later to make it 3-0 on the night and leave Galatasaray chasing shadows.
Salah finally got his reward just after the hour mark, curling in brilliantly from the edge of the area to score his 50th Champions League goal. The strike underlined Liverpool’s total control and capped off a huge European turnaround that sent them into the last eight, where Paris Saint-Germain now await.
In North London, Tottenham Hotspur bowed out despite beating Atletico Madrid 3-2 on the night, with Diego Simeone’s side progressing 7-5 on aggregate after making full use of their dominant first-leg advantage.
Spurs needed something close to a miracle after their heavy defeat in Madrid, but to their credit they played with more purpose and courage this time. Randal Kolo Muani gave the hosts hope in the 30th minute when he rose to meet Mathys Tel’s inviting cross and powered a header home.
That hope was quickly dented after the break when Julian Alvarez restored parity on the night with a superb finish on the counterattack, pushing Atletico further clear overall. But Tottenham refused to fold and responded almost immediately through Xavi Simons, whose excellent strike from range made it 2-1 on the night.
The tie was effectively killed in the 75th minute when David Hancko rose to convert Alvarez’s whipped corner, stretching Atletico’s aggregate lead to 7-4. Simons grabbed a late penalty to make it 3-2 in stoppage time after Jose Gimenez brought him down, but it was too little, too late for Igor Tudor’s men.
While Spurs can take encouragement from a far improved display, Atletico’s maturity and first-leg ruthlessness proved decisive. Simeone’s side now move into the quarter-finals, where an eye-catching showdown with Barcelona awaits.
It was, in the end, a night that summed up the brutal nature of Champions League knockout football. Bayern were relentless, Liverpool were irresistible, and Atletico were clinical enough when it mattered most. The quarter-final line-up is beginning to take shape, and after these performances, the road to the final is only getting more intense.
