De Bruyne Strike Keeps City’s Top-Four Hopes Alive

Kevin De Bruyne’s first-half goal was enough to see Manchester City past a stubborn Wolves side at the Etihad, moving Pep Guardiola’s men up to third as the season nears its close.

Manchester City took an important step toward securing a Champions League place with a narrow 1-0 victory over Wolves at the Etihad Stadium. Kevin De Bruyne, playing in what is expected to be one of his final appearances for the club, scored the game’s only goal in the 35th minute, finishing a slick move set up by Jeremy Doku’s cutback.

The match itself was a tense, closely fought contest. Wolves, in good form coming into the game with six straight wins, had their chances to cause an upset. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde missed a clear opportunity early on after misplacing a pass to Marshall Munetsi when clean through on goal. Moments later, Rayan Ait-Nouri struck the post and then saw his rebound cleared off the line by Josko Gvardiol in one of the match’s most dramatic sequences.

Despite struggling to create clear openings for much of the first half, City made their possession count just after the half-hour mark. Bernardo Silva’s pressing high up the pitch won back possession from Joao Gomes, and after a quick exchange, Omar Marmoush released Doku on the flank. The Belgian winger cut the ball back with his weaker foot to find De Bruyne, who swept a low shot into the far corner.

The second half was largely controlled by City without offering much in attack. Wolves, however, came close to snatching an equalizer when Matheus Cunha unleashed a powerful shot from distance in the 56th minute, only to see it cannon back off the post. It proved to be Wolves' final real opportunity, with City managing the closing stages well to secure all three points.

The win moves Manchester City up to third in the Premier League table, maintaining a recent upturn in form that has seen them win four consecutive league matches. It also ensures that Pep Guardiola’s side remains on track for Champions League qualification after relinquishing their Premier League title following a record-breaking four consecutive championships.

Wolves, meanwhile, remain competitive in the mid-table battle, and despite ending up on the wrong side of the result, they can take encouragement from a spirited performance against one of the league’s strongest sides. They next face Brighton, while City will have a week’s rest before traveling to face already-relegated Southampton.
