De Bruyne Strike Keeps City’s Top-Four Hopes Alive

Manchester City took an important step toward securing a Champions League place with a narrow 1-0 victory over Wolves at the Etihad Stadium. Kevin De Bruyne, playing in what is expected to be one of his final appearances for the club, scored the game’s only goal in the 35th minute, finishing a slick move set up by Jeremy Doku’s cutback.

The second half was largely controlled by City without offering much in attack. Wolves, however, came close to snatching an equalizer when Matheus Cunha unleashed a powerful shot from distance in the 56th minute, only to see it cannon back off the post. It proved to be Wolves' final real opportunity, with City managing the closing stages well to secure all three points.

The win moves Manchester City up to third in the Premier League table, maintaining a recent upturn in form that has seen them win four consecutive league matches. It also ensures that Pep Guardiola’s side remains on track for Champions League qualification after relinquishing their Premier League title following a record-breaking four consecutive championships.

Wolves, meanwhile, remain competitive in the mid-table battle, and despite ending up on the wrong side of the result, they can take encouragement from a spirited performance against one of the league’s strongest sides. They next face Brighton, while City will have a week’s rest before traveling to face already-relegated Southampton.
