Lionel Messi’s much-publicised visit to India unraveled into scenes of anger and confusion at Salt Lake Stadium as disappointed supporters revolted over what they viewed as a poorly planned and deeply underwhelming event.

Lionel Messi’s appearance in Kolkata was meant to be a landmark moment, the kind of rare spectacle capable of uniting India’s football community under one roof. Instead, the evening dissolved into tension and frustration as fans at Salt Lake Stadium reacted angrily to an event that fell far short of expectations.

The build-up had been immense. Thousands streamed into the stadium, with some supporters paying as much as twelve thousand rupees, hoping for an intimate, memorable encounter with the Argentina and Inter Miami forward. The arena buzzed with chants, replica shirts, and headbands celebrating Messi’s name as anticipation reached fever pitch.

That excitement quickly collapsed into disappointment. Messi’s interaction with supporters was far shorter than many anticipated. Surrounded tightly by layers of security, officials, and attending celebrities, he made only a brief circuit of the pitch, waving to the crowd without stopping for closer engagement. Within twenty minutes, he was escorted away, leaving fans stunned and agitated.

The situation escalated almost immediately. Sections of the crowd hurled plastic chairs and bottles toward the field, while others tore down banners or attempted to storm the pitch. Security personnel scrambled to restore order as the atmosphere turned from celebratory to volatile.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the scenes as deeply troubling and apologised publicly to Messi and the supporters. She confirmed that an official inquiry had been launched. Police later reported that the chief organiser of the event had been arrested, and authorities were exploring ways to refund fans who felt shortchanged.

The chaos unfolded during Messi’s GOAT Tour of India, a promotional circuit meant to include stops in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi. The tour had already stirred debate after the unveiling of a seventy-foot Messi statue in Kolkata, which the star attended via video link due to heavy security concerns. Many fans had also expected a short exhibition match during the event, something organisers did not deliver.

Anger grew further as spectators watched political leaders and celebrities dominate the programme. Several supporters complained that the spotlight had shifted away from the man they had paid to see. One frustrated fan told local media he had spent nearly a month’s salary to attend, only to leave deeply disappointed.

The All India Football Federation distanced itself from the fiasco, clarifying that the event was entirely privately run. Messi’s camp has not yet issued a statement.

Despite the disorder, the episode underscored Messi’s extraordinary global influence, even in a nation where football often sits in the shadow of cricket. It also highlighted the dangers of inflated expectations when organisation fails to match the scale of the moment.
