SportPesa has unveiled new monthly awards to honor the best players and coaches in Kenya’s top-flight football league. Starting in November, the initiative will see the introduction of Player of the Month and Coach of the Month accolades part of the sponsor’s wider push to raise standards, promote data-driven recognition, and strengthen the link between club success and national team development.

Leading online gaming company SportPesa, the main sponsor of Kenya’s top-tier competition the SportPesa League has announced the introduction of monthly awards aimed at recognizing and rewarding outstanding performances by players and coaches throughout the season.

The new initiative will officially kick off with the October awards, and according to SportPesa, it forms part of a broader plan to make the league more competitive and improve its overall quality.

Speaking ahead of the rollout, SportPesa’s Partnerships and Sponsorships Manager, Japheth Akhulia, confirmed that the awards will feature two main categories — Player of the Month and Coach of the Month — to celebrate excellence and consistency.

“We are going to have Player of the Month and Coach of the Month awards starting this November. This will help improve the quality of the game,” Akhulia said as the league heads into Matchday 7.

SportPesa has also partnered with data and analytics company Tisini, which has been tracking and sharing detailed match statistics throughout the season. These reports cover individual and team performances, including pre- and post-game analysis, allowing fans and analysts to better understand the dynamics behind every result.

“We’ve been sharing match stats after every game across all our platforms showing which team dominated, who stood out, and who was named Man of the Match,” Akhulia explained. “Now, with the Player of the Month, Coach of the Month, and a Team of the Month based on consistent performance, we’re adding an extra layer of motivation and transparency to the competition.”

Beyond celebrating achievement, the initiative also aims to strengthen the foundation of Kenyan football by encouraging consistent performance and professionalism at the club level.

Akhulia emphasized that such recognition will not only reward excellence but also help Harambee Stars head coach, John McCarthy, identify in-form local players for national team selection.

“With these stats and monthly awards, I believe coach McCarthy will soon have a good problem — too many top-performing players to choose from,” Akhulia added with a smile.

The monthly awards are expected to inject fresh excitement into the SportPesa League, offering players and coaches greater motivation to perform while giving fans more to look forward to each month.
