Spain launched their UEFA Euro 2024 campaign in emphatic fashion, dismantling Croatia 3-0 in their Group B opener at a packed Olympiastadion in Berlin. The victory showcased Spain’s attacking prowess and defensive solidity, putting them firmly in control of the group.

Youngster Yamal Makes History, Veterans Deliver

The first half was all Spain. Álvaro Morata, a EURO veteran, opened the scoring in the 29th minute, expertly finishing a pinpoint pass from the impressive Fabián Ruiz. Just three minutes later, Ruiz turned scorer himself, weaving through the Croatian defense before firing into the net.

The final blow of the half came courtesy of Dani Carvajal, who converted a cross from a history-making 16-year-old, Lamine Yamal. Yamal’s assist cemented his place as the youngest player ever to feature in a EURO finals match, a moment that sent the Spanish fans into a frenzy.

Croatia Falters, Spain’s Defense Shines

Croatia attempted a comeback in the second half, with Joško Gvardiol and Ante Budimir threatening the Spanish goal. However, Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simón proved unbeatable. He not only made crucial saves throughout the match but also denied a late penalty from Bruno Petković, preserving a clean sheet and capping off a dominant defensive display.

Delighted Coach Praises Team Spirit

Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, was ecstatic with his team’s performance. He lauded their ambition and unity, highlighting the strong sense of family within the squad. “This group are ambitious and it is a huge family, so I’m delighted for everyone,” he declared.

While acknowledging the importance of his contributions, he emphasized the collective effort: “The assist was important, but so was the goal. I thought the team did really well. We did what we wanted to and worked very hard for it. We achieved everything we wanted as a team, which is important.”

Croatia Seeks Improvement, Modrić Expresses Disappointment

Across the field, the Croatian camp was understandably downcast. Coach Zlatko Dalić acknowledged the need for significant improvement: “It is not a good start, but I congratulate Spain on the victory. We lacked energy and aggression.”

Croatian veteran Luka Modrić, still a world-class talent despite his advancing years, shared the disappointment: “It’s not the result we were hoping for, but it is what it is. We still have two more matches to improve and make up for it.”

Coach Luciano Spalletti emphasized the importance of playing their stylish brand of football throughout the tournament, a strategy that ultimately paid off.
