A new report from the Mirror claims that Arsenal and Tottenham are interested in signing Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar. The Swiss international has been stellar for the Magpies this season and he is proving to be one of the best signings of the summer in the Premier League.
The 27-year-old got off to a difficult start at Newcastle as a substitute on the bench, but once his name was called to start a match he made sure to solidify his place on the back-line. Schar is a dynamic player who plays aggressive, confrontational football. In addition to making decisive tackles in the back, Schar also has three goals to his name this season.
It is no surprise that some of the Premier League’s top teams are expressing interest in the talented defender. Arsenal and Tottenham both have tons of money to spend this summer and if the price is right Newcastle would most likely entertain their offers. That being said, Schar is a key pillar for Newcastle’s back-line and the club would be wise to keep him on Tyneside.
Schar Must Stay
People will have their own opinions, but it is safe to assume that most of you would agree with the following statement: Fabian Schar is Newcastle’s best defender. An important trait that makes him the best defender on the roster is his consistency.
This consistency is also a major reason why Schar was ranked as the top player in the most recent Sky Sports Player Rankings. In addition, there are three statistics that stand out and highlight just how important Schar is for Newcastle.
- Clean Sheets – 5
- Goals Conceded – 17
- Tackle Success Rating – 67%
These numbers show just how solid Newcastle are defensively when Schar is in the starting lineup. The Magpies have a top ten defense in the Premier League, but that would not be the case without Schar.
Arsenal and Tottenham are top teams and the fact that they are interested in Schar shows how much recognition his performances are getting. Benitez is pleased with what Schar brings to the table and the Toon Army can only hope that he continues to wear the black and white stripes next season.
