Record FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia will be gunning for all three points this Saturday, April 19th, when they travel to Dandora Stadium to face a resurgent Sofapaka in a must-win match that could shake up the league standings.
Currently sitting third with 46 points, Gor Mahia are just three behind leaders Kenya Police (49), and level with Tusker FC, but boast a superior goal difference. A win on Saturday would catapult K’Ogalo to the summit for the first time this season—heaping pressure on their closest rivals ahead of Sunday’s fixtures.
The title race has reached boiling point. Kenya Police missed the chance to solidify their position after falling 1-0 to Ulinzi Stars last week, while Tusker face struggling Nairobi City Stars on Sunday and could reclaim top spot with a win—should Gor Mahia leapfrog Police in the standings.
Gor Mahia’s captain, Philemon Otieno, has made their mission clear.
“We are targeting maximum points. The league is taking shape and we must win this game,” he told the club’s media team, emphasizing the pressure of representing one of Kenya’s most successful football clubs.
Their opponents, Sofapaka, won’t go down without a fight. Sitting 8th with 37 points, “Batoto ba Mungu” have found form under head coach Ezekiel Akwana, coming off a solid 1-0 win over Ulinzi Stars. With an unbeaten home streak of three matches, they’re determined to protect their turf and climb higher in the standings.
Gor Mahia, on the other hand, are enjoying a rich vein of form. The Green Army is unbeaten in 10 matches, with their last loss coming in January—a 2-1 defeat to Tusker FC. Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has built a side that’s hard to beat and well-drilled on both ends of the pitch.
In the reverse fixture earlier this season, Gor Mahia defeated Sofapaka 2-0 thanks to goals from Geoffrey Ochieng and Shariff Musa. Saturday’s clash promises to be just as intense—with title hopes, form streaks, and pride all on the line.
