Mashemeji Derby Postponed Over Venue and Security Issues

Kenya’s most eagerly awaited football fixture, the Mashemeji Derby, has been suspended indefinitely just days before kickoff. The match between archrivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, initially scheduled for this coming Sunday, was called off due to unresolved venue and security issues.

In a joint statement on Friday evening, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Leagues and Competitions Committee confirmed the postponement, citing the unavailability of a suitable stadium and broader concerns surrounding safety and infrastructure readiness.

The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, which was initially designated to host the fixture, has been ruled out by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) due to ongoing final preparations for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN). As one of the official competition venues for CHAN, Kasarani remains closed for renovations and compliance inspections.

“The decision follows recent developments regarding the availability of suitable venues. CAF has directed that Kasarani remains unavailable as it is being prepared for CHAN 2025,” the FKF statement read.

Compounding the challenge, an alternative suggestion to relocate the match to the Ulinzi Sports Complex and play behind closed doors was also dismissed. Ulinzi Sports Complex officials declined the proposal, expressing concerns over security, logistical constraints, and the potential for infrastructure damage.

“CAF had proposed moving the match to Ulinzi, but the venue cited internal concerns about safety and vandalism risks,” FKF explained.

The abrupt announcement has left fans disappointed and uncertain, especially after earlier assurances by FKF Secretary Harold Ndege that Kasarani was ready and security would be assured.

In response to the situation, FKF held a consultative meeting with officials from both Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards on Friday, May 9. Both clubs were briefed on the reasons behind the decision and agreed to communicate updates to their supporters as new information becomes available.

Gor Mahia FC has since issued an apology to fans via its official social media platforms, urging calm and patience. The club assured supporters that all tickets purchased for the postponed match remain valid and will be honored once a new date is set.

As of now, the rescheduled date remains unclear, with FKF expected to announce the way forward once a suitable venue is confirmed.
