Arsenal Overcome Mansfield To Reach FA Cup Quarter Finals
- Arsenal survived a spirited challenge from Mansfield Town to win 2-1 at One Call Stadium, with Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze scoring to send the Gunners into the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Arsenal secured their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in six years after edging past a determined Mansfield Town side 2-1 in a lively fifth-round clash at One Call Stadium on Saturday.
Despite the difference in league status, Mansfield gave the Premier League leaders a serious test and produced a fearless performance that kept the contest alive until the final whistle.
The Gunners eventually relied on moments of individual brilliance from Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze to seal their passage to the last eight.
Mikel Arteta’s side started on the front foot and created early chances through Max Dowman and Leandro Trossard, but Mansfield responded with impressive attacking intent of their own. The hosts came close when Louis Reed and Rhys Oates both tested Kepa Arrizabalaga, while Tyler Roberts narrowly missed the target with an ambitious effort.
Arsenal continued to push forward and nearly opened the scoring when Madueke’s corner struck the crossbar. Dowman also came close from close range, but Mansfield goalkeeper Liam Roberts produced an excellent save to keep the game level.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 41st minute and it was worth the wait. Gabriel Martinelli held the ball well on the left flank before laying it off to Madueke, who unleashed a superb left-footed strike from the edge of the box that flew into the top corner.
It was a goal of real quality and gave Arsenal a narrow lead heading into halftime.
Mansfield refused to back down after the break and their persistence was rewarded just five minutes into the second half. A defensive mix-up from Arsenal proved costly as substitute Will Evans intercepted a loose back pass from Marli Salmon. The forward raced clear, rounded Cristhian Mosquera and calmly slotted the ball past Arrizabalaga to level the score at 1-1.
The goal ignited the atmosphere inside One Call Stadium and suddenly Arsenal were facing a real cup fight.
Arteta responded by turning to his bench, introducing Eze and Jurriën Timber in search of fresh attacking inspiration.
That decision proved decisive in the 66th minute.
Christian Norgaard found Eze just outside the Mansfield penalty area and the midfielder wasted no time, unleashing a thunderous strike that rocketed into the top corner. It was a stunning finish that restored Arsenal’s lead and ultimately settled the contest.
Mansfield continued to battle bravely and even threatened a late equaliser when Oliver Irow headed straight at Arrizabalaga from close range during stoppage time.
Arsenal also had opportunities to extend their advantage, with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli both going close on the counter attack, but the score remained unchanged as the final whistle confirmed the Gunners’ progression.
Although Mansfield bowed out of the competition, their performance earned widespread praise after creating numerous chances and pushing one of England’s strongest teams all the way.
For Arsenal, the victory keeps their FA Cup ambitions alive as they move into the quarter-finals and continue their pursuit of domestic silverware this season.
