Arsenal tightened their grip on the Premier League summit with a composed 2-0 win over Brentford, stretching their lead to five points after another assured home performance in North London.

Arsenal kept their charge alive with a steady 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Emirates Stadium, a result that pushed Mikel Arteta’s side five points clear at the top of the Premier League. It took only 11 minutes for the Gunners to set the tone, and once they did, they never truly loosened their grip on the contest.

Mikel Merino, who has emerged as one of the most inspired signings of the season, stepped up once again. Deployed in an advanced role because of Arsenal’s ongoing injury crisis, he finished off a well-crafted move with a clever header that skipped off the wet turf and nestled past Kelleher. The Gunners rode on that early momentum and dictated the tempo with calm assurance.

Brentford, however, did not fold. They crafted their best moment just ten minutes later when Kevin Schade rose highest to meet a corner, only for David Raya to produce a stunning fingertip save that pushed the ball onto the crossbar. It was the closest the visitors came all night. From that moment, Arsenal tightened the screws, controlling possession and limiting Brentford to half chances and set plays.

Noni Madueke repeatedly caused problems down the right flank with direct running and close control, but he found Kelleher alert each time. Martinelli and Rice also had their sights on goal, only to be denied by tight defensive recovery or smart goalkeeping.

Arsenal suffered a setback before the break when Cristhian Mosquera went down injured, forcing an early defensive reshuffle for a side already missing Gabriel and William Saliba. Even then, the league leaders stayed composed, refusing to panic under Brentford’s aerial pressure.

The pattern remained similar after halftime. Brentford pushed with more purpose, forcing corners and throwing bodies forward, but they lacked the sharpness required in the final third. Their introduction of Thiago, one of the league’s top scorers, still did little to trouble Arsenal’s makeshift defence.

Arsenal continued to probe with patience. Declan Rice forced a sharp low save, and Calafiori sent the Emirates roaring when he sliced through Brentford’s midfield late on, only to see his shot parried back into danger. Saka pounced on the rebound but found Kelleher standing firm once more.

However, Saka always finds a moment.

In the 91st minute, Merino slipped a clever ball into his path, and the winger cut onto his left foot before unleashing a strike that beat Kelleher after looping awkwardly over him and bouncing beyond the line. Goal-line technology confirmed what every Arsenal fan had already celebrated.

Arsenal deserved every bit of the victory, generating more chances and controlling the match with maturity. Their unbeaten run now stretches to 18 matches across all competitions, and with the title race heating up, Arteta’s men continue to set the pace.

Next up for the league leaders is a high-stakes clash away to Aston Villa, while Brentford remain stuck in 13th and head back to North London for another derby, this time against Tottenham Hotspur.
