Chelsea have officially announced the signing of highly-rated striker Liam Delap, completing a deal after activating his relegation release clause following Ipswich Town’s drop back to the Championship.
The 21-year-old, who came through the Manchester City academy, reportedly rejected a major offer from Everton to lead their rebuild, opting instead to join a Chelsea side preparing for a return to the UEFA Champions League under new head coach Enzo Maresca a manager he knows well from their shared time in City’s youth setup.
Speaking to the club’s official media after putting pen to paper, Delap expressed his excitement about the move and outlined his ambitions at Stamford Bridge.
“I understand the stature of this club and the incredible direction it’s heading in with the players and head coach here. It’s the perfect place for me to develop, and I’m here to win trophies,” Delap said.
He added that his conversations with the club made it clear everyone is united in their desire to restore Chelsea to the top of European football, something he’s eager to be a part of.
The striker joins a Chelsea side that lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League last season and is now looking to build a squad capable of challenging domestically and in Europe once again.
However, with Delap’s arrival comes fresh competition for Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea’s current first-choice forward. Former striker Chris Sutton has already warned Enzo Maresca to tailor the team’s play to Delap’s strengths if they are to unlock his full potential a move that could further unsettle Jackson, who is reportedly unhappy at the club.
For now though, Chelsea fans have a new face to rally behind a hungry, ambitious striker ready to make his mark at Stamford Bridge.
