The much-awaited Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, set for November 30, is hanging in the balance after both potential venues were thrown into confusion due to prior bookings.
Kasarani Stadium traditionally the first-choice ground for high-profile fixtures has already been secured by Nairobi United for their CAF Confederation Cup match against AS Maniema on the same day. AS Maniema are also scheduled to train on the pitch a day earlier, effectively locking out any possibility of hosting the derby on either Saturday or Sunday.
Nyayo Stadium, the second major option, is also unavailable. The facility has been booked by the Office of the President ahead of World Aids Day activities. Event preparations begin on Sunday, leaving Nyayo open only on Saturday.
This situation leaves organisers with a difficult decision. If the derby is to be staged at Nyayo Stadium, it must be moved to Saturday, November 29 unless the government relocates the World Aids Day event to an alternative site such as Uhuru Gardens.
With the clash between Kenya’s biggest rivals fast approaching, fans now await clarity from league officials on where—and when the derby will be played.
