Valverde Hat-Trick Fires Real Madrid Past Manchester City

Even with that missed penalty, Madrid remained fully in control. Carlo Ancelotti's side managed the game with authority, defended with discipline and kept City talisman Erling Haaland largely anonymous. The Norwegian striker managed only limited involvement before being withdrawn late on after another frustrating evening against Spanish opposition.

The final whistle confirmed a massive result for the 15-time European champions, who now head to Manchester with a three-goal cushion and one foot in the quarter-finals. For City, the scale of the defeat leaves them needing something extraordinary in the second leg if they are to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
