Vinicius Double Sends Real Madrid Past Manchester City
- Real Madrid marched into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night after beating Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium, completing a dominant 5-1 aggregate victory over Pep Guardiola's side.
Real Madrid once again proved too strong for Manchester City in Europe after claiming a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night to seal an emphatic 5-1 aggregate triumph and book their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Los Blancos arrived in Manchester with a commanding 3-0 advantage from the first leg and never truly looked in danger of letting it slip, even in a chaotic contest that saw City reduced to 10 men in the first half.
Pep Guardiola's men actually started with intensity and urgency, knowing they needed something special to revive the tie. City pinned Madrid back in the opening stages and created early chances through Rayan Cherki and Rodri, but Thibaut Courtois stood firm in goal for the visitors.
Real Madrid, however, weathered that early pressure and delivered the decisive blow midway through the first half.
The turning point came in the 20th minute when Bernardo Silva handled Vinicius Junior's goalbound effort on the line. After a VAR review, the referee awarded Real Madrid a penalty and sent the City captain off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Vinicius stepped up and calmly sent Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way to put Real Madrid 1-0 ahead on the night and 4-0 up on aggregate, leaving Manchester City with an almost impossible mountain to climb.
That goal looked to have ended the contest, but City did show some fight before the break. Jeremy Doku caused problems down the left flank and his dangerous low delivery in the 41st minute eventually fell to Erling Haaland, who bundled the ball over the line to make it 1-1 on the night.
The goal gave the home side brief hope, but with a man down and still needing three more goals just to force extra time, the task remained enormous.
Real Madrid controlled the tie better after the restart, although City continued to push forward with bravery and determination. Doku remained their brightest attacking outlet, repeatedly testing Madrid's defence with his dribbling and direct running, while Haaland also forced a sharp save from Andriy Lunin after the Ukrainian replaced Courtois at half-time.
Despite City's efforts, Madrid always looked the more dangerous side in transition. Vinicius was a constant threat, Brahim Diaz linked play well, and Aurelien Tchouameni went close with a header that forced a fine save from Donnarumma.
Kylian Mbappe was later introduced from the bench as Real Madrid added fresh energy for the closing stages, but the final decisive moment again belonged to Vinicius.
Deep into stoppage time, Tchouameni surged forward and delivered an excellent cross into the box, where Vinicius arrived to steer home from close range and seal a 2-1 win on the night. The Brazilian had earlier seen another effort ruled out for offside, but there was no denying him this time as he wrapped up a complete and ruthless Madrid performance.
For Manchester City, it was another painful European exit at the hands of the Spanish giants. Despite registering 22 shots and an xG of 1.91, they were made to pay for missed chances, poor discipline and the costly red card that changed the game.
Haaland's goal offered City a flicker of resistance, while Doku was outstanding in patches, but the damage from the first leg and the numerical disadvantage in the second proved too much to overcome.
For Carlo Ancelotti's side, or in this case Alvaro Arbeloa's matchday team leadership, it was another statement performance on the European stage. Real Madrid have built a fearsome reputation in this competition, and once again they showed why they remain one of the teams to fear as the tournament enters its decisive phase.
Manchester City now turn their attention back to domestic matters, with serious questions again likely to be asked about their inability to overcome Madrid in Europe. For Real Madrid, the march continues, and after another commanding knockout display, belief will only continue to grow.
