Kvaratskhelia Double Powers PSG Past Chelsea In Paris Thriller
- Paris Saint-Germain seized control of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie after beating Chelsea 5-2 in a chaotic first-leg encounter at Parc des Princes, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring twice late on.
Paris Saint-Germain put one foot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after defeating Chelsea 5-2 in a breathless Round of 16 first-leg clash at Parc des Princes on Wednesday night.
In a match packed with momentum swings, Chelsea twice fought back to level the score, but Luis Enrique’s side produced a ruthless late surge to leave the Premier League club with a mountain to climb ahead of the second leg in London.
PSG made a bright start and took the lead in the 10th minute through Bradley Barcola. Ousmane Dembele whipped in a dangerous delivery from the right, Joao Neves nodded the ball down intelligently, and Barcola reacted quickest in the middle to fire home from close range with the effort taking a slight deflection on its way in.
The French champions looked dangerous whenever they pushed forward, but Chelsea responded well and gradually found their way into the contest. Their reward came in the 28th minute when Enzo Fernandez picked out Malo Gusto with a lofted pass into the box. Left with too much space, the full-back took a touch and then drove his finish through Matvey Safonov to make it 1-1.
That equaliser gave Chelsea fresh belief, and they continued to carry a threat in transition. However, PSG struck again five minutes before the break with a classic counter-attacking move. After Safonov had denied Cole Palmer at one end, the hosts broke quickly through Desire Doue, who released Dembele. The forward still had plenty to do, but he surged ahead, shifted his body twice and buried a clinical finish into the bottom-left corner to restore PSG’s advantage at 2-1.
Chelsea refused to go away and found another response in the 57th minute. Pedro Neto led a sharp break down the left before sending a precise low cross into the area, where Enzo Fernandez timed his run perfectly to side-foot home and level the game at 2-2.
At that stage, the tie felt delicately balanced and Chelsea had reason to believe they could leave Paris with a valuable draw. Instead, one costly mistake changed everything.
PSG regained the lead in the 74th minute after a poor attempt to play out from the back by Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen. The loose pass was cut out and the ball eventually broke kindly for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who showed composure to square for Vitinha. The midfielder took one touch and lifted a composed finish over the stranded goalkeeper to make it 3-2.
Chelsea never truly recovered from that blow. Their shape became loose, their decision-making deteriorated and PSG punished them mercilessly in the closing stages.
Kvaratskhelia made it 4-2 in the 86th minute with a moment of pure quality. Collecting the ball in space outside the penalty area, the Georgian winger shifted inside and unleashed a thunderous strike that flew beyond Jorgensen despite the goalkeeper getting a slight touch.
The visitors then completely lost their discipline in stoppage time as tensions flared on the touchline and PSG continued to find space. Deep into added time, Achraf Hakimi surged down the right and delivered a precise low cutback into the middle, where Kvaratskhelia arrived to finish first time and complete a devastating late double.
For all of PSG’s attacking quality, the scoreline was still remarkable given the expected goals told a different story. Chelsea finished with a higher xG of 1.53 compared to PSG’s 0.87, but the French side were vastly more clinical and far more composed in decisive moments.
Luis Enrique will be delighted with the cutting edge shown by his side, especially after what had looked like a fragile defensive display for long periods. Chelsea, on the other hand, will regret the individual errors and lapses in concentration that turned a competitive first leg into a punishing defeat.
The result leaves PSG as firm favourites to progress to the quarter-finals, while Chelsea must now produce something special at Stamford Bridge if they are to rescue their European campaign.
