AFC Leopards kept the pressure on in the Kenya Premier League title race after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tusker FC at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

In a match short on clear-cut chances but rich in tactical discipline, it was Hassan Beja who made the difference with a decisive 81st-minute goal that handed Ingwe all three points in a contest that looked destined to end goalless.

The first half was a cagey affair, with both sides showing plenty of structure and discipline but little attacking adventure. Tusker enjoyed more of the ball in the opening stages and looked the more settled side in possession, but they found it difficult to penetrate an AFC Leopards defence that stayed compact and alert throughout.

Leopards, on their part, looked to strike on the counter but lacked the final pass needed to turn promising transitions into genuine scoring opportunities. Their attacking moves often fizzled out before they could truly test the Tusker back line.

After the restart, the tempo of the game improved as both teams began to sense the importance of the result. AFC Leopards raised their intensity, pushed higher up the pitch and committed more bodies forward in search of a breakthrough.

That aggressive approach gave them greater territorial control and forced Tusker into rushed decisions in their own half. The pressure began to build, with Leopards earning a number of set-piece opportunities and spending longer spells in advanced areas.

Tusker remained disciplined and resilient for large parts of the second half, attempting to absorb pressure while looking to break quickly. However, they failed to produce the final pass or attacking incision needed to trouble Leopards in any meaningful way.

With the game drifting towards a stalemate, Leopards finally found the moment they needed in the 81st minute. Hassan Beja kept his composure to finish off a well-worked move and break Tusker resistance, sending the Ingwe faithful into celebration.

From there, AFC Leopards managed the final stages with maturity. They slowed the tempo, stayed compact defensively and ensured Tusker had little room to mount a serious comeback. Tusker did push bodies forward late on, but their efforts lacked the cutting edge required to rescue a point.

The result gives AFC Leopards a major lift in the Kenya Premier League standings as the title race gathers momentum. Ingwe now sit second on 49 points, seven behind leaders Gor Mahia, keeping themselves firmly in the hunt heading into the decisive stretch of the season.

For Tusker, it was another frustrating outing as they remain seventh on 37 points, knowing they must find greater consistency if they are to finish strongly.

In other Kenya Premier League matches played on Sunday, Posta Rangers beat Kariobangi Sharks 2-1, Kakamega Homeboyz drew 1-1 with Bandari FC, Ulinzi Stars secured a 2-1 win over Nairobi United, while Murang'a Seal and Mathare United shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
