Real Madrid have finalized an early transfer for Trent Alexander Arnold after striking a €10 million (£8.4m/$11.4m) agreement with Liverpool ensuring the England international is available for the Spanish club's full Club World Cup run.

Originally set to join Madrid on a free transfer after his Liverpool contract expired on June 30, the 26-year-old defender will now head to Spain immediately. He’s signed a six-year deal with Los Blancos, who opted to accelerate the move to include Alexander-Arnold in their group-stage matches at the upcoming Club World Cup in the United States.

Madrid will benefit from FIFA's newly approved “exceptional registration window” from June 1 to June 10, which allows teams to register new players ahead of the expanded tournament. With group games scheduled against Al Hilal (June 18), Pachuca (June 22), and Red Bull Salzburg (June 26), Real Madrid moved quickly to secure the right-back’s services.

Liverpool agreed to the proposal earlier this week, though the official announcement was delayed due to a tragic incident during the club’s title celebrations, when a car plowed into a crowd, injuring 79 people.

While Madrid could have waited and added Alexander Arnold for free ahead of the knockout rounds (thanks to FIFA’s mid-tournament window from June 27 to July 3), they chose instead to pay for his immediate availability a move that could prove pivotal in the high-stakes group phase.

This wasn’t the first time Madrid showed interest in bringing the defender in sooner. Back in January, the Spanish giants were prepared to offer €40 million, but Liverpool turned down the approach. Alexander-Arnold, for his part, wanted to finish the season with his boyhood club and focus on their Premier League title pursuit.

Over his 354 appearances in a Liverpool shirt, Alexander Arnold netted 23 goals and registered 92 assists, cementing himself as one of the most creative defenders of his generation. His trophy haul includes two league titles, a Champions League crown, the FA Cup, and the Carabao Cup.

His departure, however, wasn’t without controversy. After announcing his decision to leave in May, he was met with boos at Anfield when subbed on during a clash with Arsenal. In contrast, he received a warm farewell during the club’s title celebration, lifting the Premier League trophy to cheers in Liverpool’s final home match of the season a 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Now, Alexander Arnold embarks on a new chapter with the 15-time European champions, with Madrid banking on his talent and experience to help lift their first-ever Club World Cup under the expanded format.
